Apothecary Diaries s1 thoughts

[personal profile] jiggit was asking for my thoughts on The Apothecary Diaries.  I have now finished s1. Overall all I really like it. And it's beautifully animated.

My thoughts:

Maomao is an excellent protagonist. Her love of drugs and poisons is so pure and true. The way that she's generally pretty phlegmatic, but also deeply compassionate. The way she tries to be careful navigating power structures (in which she generally has very little power). It's all just very neat!

Sandman episode 1 thoughts

I found the first episode significantly more engaging than the comic issue it is based on, which is generally agreed to be a weak start to an excellent series.

-43 degrees Celsius!!

So it was very cold when I got off work this morning.

-43 degrees Celsius.  43 below.  (Celsius and Fahrenheit line up at -40)

(I started my car 15 minutes before shift change, so I would not have to wait 20 minutes for the engine to be warmed enough to drive, and no, it was not happy after spending 12 hours not plugged in.  It started but like.  Just barely.)

In case you are wondering what 42 below feels like: really fucking cold.  Like actually physically painful.  I own a very warm coat and I’m only outside for very brief periods.  And my heater works.  So I’m fine!  It’s just.  So cold.  (I think I need to get new driving gloves though.  The ones I have are not cutting it.)

(no subject)

I just adopted a cat!! It’s been about a decade since I’ve had one, and I am super excited about it. He is an 8 month old champagne coloured tabby from the SPCA. He just came home with me on Thursday, so he’s still settling in, but seems to be adjusting pretty quickly. His hobbies include exploring, demanding pettings, hiding behind the couch, and chasing a laser pointer (the only cat-related item he has seemed remotely interested in so far… even after spraying catnip spray on the scratching post, cat tower, and catbed).

Here is a terrible picture from my phone:

He still needs to be neutered, so I’m still in the foster-to-adopt stage, but I’m confident this will work out well.

We’re calling him Flannery. (After the author Flannery O'Connor, who I have not yet read, but is one of my dad’s favourites. He tried to get Flannery as part of my name when I was born. Also tried with my brother. And the dog we got when I was a teenager. And one of my budgies. He is very pleased to have finally met with success.)

Here is a better pic my dad took:

I should note that he is a BEAUTIFUL cat and neither of these pictures really give the full effect.

I like him so much <33
